The internet’s fascination with Luigi Mangione’s fashion choices took another turn on Friday when he appeared for a hearing at the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City. The suspect, accused of killing United Health care CEO Brian Thompson, arrived in a dark green knit sweater, khaki pants, and brown loafers—an ensemble that quickly captured the public’s attention. Within 24 hours of his court appearance, Google searches for “Luigi Mangione outfits” surged by 350%. His choice of footwear, in particular, became a focal point, with searches for “Luigi Mangione loafers” skyrocketing by 1,400% and “Luigi Mangione ankles” increasing by 500%.
This marks the second time Mangione’s courtroom attire has gone viral. On December 23, he appeared for his arraignment in a burgundy sweater, sparking widespread online debate. TikTok users speculated about the brand of his outfit, while retailers like Nordstrom and Maison Margiela saw their similar burgundy sweaters sell out online. Despite the buzz surrounding his fashion, Mangione’s courtroom style remains understated and appropriate. Both the dark green and burgundy hues of his sweaters are considered respectable and suitable for court appearances.
Mangione was arrested on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a five-day manhunt. He faces 11 charges in New York, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, to which he has pleaded not guilty. On February 14, Mangione released his first formal statement since his arrest through a website created by his New York defense team. In the statement, he expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received, noting that messages of encouragement have come from diverse backgrounds and locations worldwide. “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive,” he said. A trial date for the case has not yet been set.
