Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is officially recognized and celebrated in the United States every May.

The observance began as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week in 1977, designated to honor the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

In 1990, Asian Pacific American Heritage Week was expanded to a month-long celebration, officially designating May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

In 2009, the name was changed to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to be more inclusive and recognize the diversity within these communities.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and histories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The month highlights the significant contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in various fields, including arts, sciences, politics, sports, technology, and more.

It serves as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the history, experiences, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is marked by various events, festivals, cultural performances, exhibitions, and educational programs held nationwide.

The month also serves as a platform to address challenges faced by Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, promoting social justice, equality, and empowerment.

Recognizing and appreciating the contributions and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders should extend beyond the designated month, fostering ongoing understanding, inclusivity,  and support.
